Figure 1: Diffusion zone kolsterised 316L Stainless Steel. Gradual increase of carbon content from base material to surface correlates with gradual increase of hardness (HV 0.05).
Figure 2: Under rapid loading (hammer&pick), the diffusion zone (Carbon S-Phase) shows the same ductility than the base material. No chipping or flaking.
Figure 3: Standard processes like nitrocarburising lead to the formation of unwanted carbides and nitrides, which lower the corrosion resistance of the austenitic stainless steel (right). With Kolsterising a hard and ductile diffusion zone without the formation of carbides is achievable. The corrosion resistance is maintained.
Figure 4: Even smallest spacing, like these 60µm bores are uniformly treatable with Kolsterising.
Figure 5: New design options are available with Kolsterising. Instead of using a polymeric sealing which has to be changed, is un-hygienic and hard to clean, it is possible to use a metal on metal slide bearing for this dosing pump application. The new design is easy to clean and has a longer lifetime compared to the previous design.
